The Compass: Volume 1; Issue 7

This Week at a Glance: Week of Feb. 27th

It is with heavy hearts that we said farewell to Michael Novak last Friday, February 17th, 2017. A Catholic philosopher and distinguished visiting professor at The Busch School, Ambassador Novak “helped carve a space for religion in modern politics, diplomacy and economics, arguing that capitalism is the economic system most likely to achieve the spiritual goods of defeating poverty and encouraging human creativity”. - The Washington Post.

He died in his home in Washington at age 83. If you attended the funeral on Saturday at CUA, please share your thoughts and pictures with us at busch-marketing@cua.edu so we can continue to celebrate his life among our community.

Student Spotlight

This week’s Student Spotlight truly embodies a busy bee. Cecilia Pastrone starts off her day every morning by waking up at 6:30 a.m. to hit the books at the library, then heads to class, attends her internship at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, goes to the gym, and finally finishes her day back at the library. Cecilia’s discipline and dedication is truly inspiring.

As she approaches her senior year, her ambitious and hardworking demeanor are evident in her academic achievements. Cecilia has a 4.0 GPA and is one of only a handful of students in Honors Capstone Course. She has been a teaching assistant for several teachers since her sophomore year. She has undoubtedly taken full advantage of CUA’s academic programs, even abroad at Oxford University last Spring.

Cecilia’s favorite aspect of CUA is being close to all the action of the government! That’s why on her free time you can catch her at the Supreme Court, attending congressional hearings, as well tours to the White House and Pentagon. She believes that even in her everyday tasks, such as being a teaching assistant, CUA has taught her to use business as a force for good.

Cecilia says, “I enjoy working with other students and helping them succeed. Using my knowledge to help others succeed in their education is how I, as a student, use business as a force for good. Once I graduate and begin work, I hope to use economics and finance to improve the quality of life of others.”

If you ever need a study buddy in the morning, be sure to join Cecilia in the library!

If you would like to nominate a Busch student who goes above and beyond in academics, athletics, service, or student life, please fill out this nomination form.
